Fascinated by detail, nuances of time, texture, memory and landscape Luke Pell is an artist living in Scotland.  Maker, curator, dramaturg he collaborates with other artists and organisations imagining alternative contexts for performance, participation and discourse that might reveal wisdoms for living. Noticing threads that weave between people and place his work takes form as intimate encounters, poetic objects, installations and environments – choreographies – for physical and virtual spaces. 

Luke’s performance work has been presented throughout the UK and internationally including: LeithLate17; Bloomsbury Festival; Cruising for Art at Anti- Festival Finland and In Between Time Bristol; Dance International Glasgow; Dansens Hus Stockholm; E- Motional Romania; Light Moves Ireland; Unlimited Festival Southbank Centre and by I’m With You Room of Requirement Berlin.

His digital work includes the award-wining Take Me To Bed with Jo Verrent, An Open Field with Fevered Sleep, A Long Side with Lucy Cash and Emilyn Claid and Crossings with Dance Base. Luke co-edited the recent edition of the Journal of Dance and Somatic Practices Embodiment, Interactivity and Digital Performance.

Alongside his own artistic projects he works as a dramaturg for dance collaborating with Claire Cunningham and Jess Curtis The Way You Look (At Me) Tonight, Robert Softley-Gale Purposeless Movements for Birds of Paradise Theatre, Caroline Bowditch’s Falling in Love with Frida and regularly with Janice Parker Projects.

Committed to artist and art-form development his curatorial and participatory projects create spaces for artists and experts from different fields and realities to gather to explore relationships between words and movement, periphery and community. Arriving at new perspectives, articulations and understandings of what is to be in the world.

Projects include The Talking Place for Fevered Sleep as part of Men & Girls Dance, What Next for Independent Dance, A (Supper) Room Full of Words for Greenwich Dance and the In Dialogue series for Candoco Dance Company. His growing body of writing for dance – online, in print and presented in person – has been commissioned by Scottish Dance Theatre, South East Dance, Bedford Creative Arts, Southbank Centre, Live Art Development Agency, Yorkshire Dance and the Invisible Difference Project.

Luke has taught and lectured for students, artists and professionals worldwide – D.O.C.H Stockholm, London Contemporary Dance School, Roehampton University, The Royal Academy of Dance and Trinity Laban – and has been an advisor to a range of choreographers, companies and development programmes – Nigel Charnock, Dance Base Dancers Emerging Bursary Scheme, Jardin D’Europe with Southbank Centre, Kate Marsh with Metal and Wellcome Trust Arts Awards – he was Chair of the board for Chisenhale Dance Space from 2012-2016 is Associate Artist with Fevered Sleep and is a Dance Base Associate Artist.
